Mi Play, first phone in Xiaomi’s Play series, launched: Specs and price

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has unveiled Mi Play smartphone at an event held in China. The device, which was subject to heavy teasers and leaks in the past few weeks, is the first in Mi’s newest smartphone series – Play and comes powered by MediaTek Helio P35 SoC coupled with a waterdrop-style display notch.

It has been launched in only one variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The device has been priced at CNY 1,099 (Rs. 11,000 approx) and will be available in black, dream blue and twilight gold colours. As part of the launch, Xiaomi will provide 10GB data every month for a period of one year.

The device will be available for purchase through Xiaomi’s offline stores in China starting December 25, 10am. The device is expected to hit Indian shores in the early part of 2019. However, the 10GB data offer will not be available in India.

Specifications

The mid-range smartphone sports a 5.84-inch full-HD+ notch display with 1080*2280p resolution and aspect ratio of 19:9. The mobile phone sports gradient finish at the back, 2.5D curved glass at the front and measures 147.76mm ×71.89mm × 7.8mm.

The device is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P35 SoC and is backed by 4GB LPDDR4X RAM. For graphics crunching, the device comes with IMG GD8320 Graphics Processing Unit. The handset comes with 64GB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 256 GB with microSD card. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 10 skin loaded on top.

In optics, Mi Play sports dual rear-camera setup with 12MP primary sensor and 2MP secondary sensors with 1.25μm pixel lens. The primary lens features an aperture of f/2.2. Apart from LED flash for low-light photography assistance, the camera features PDAF for super-fast focus. At the front, there is an 8MP camera.The device draws power from 3,000 mAh battery. In connectivity, the dual-SIM 4G smartphone comes with features such as dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, A-GPS, Type-C for connecting to computers, along with sensors such s gyroscope, accelerometer. For security, Mi Play comes with a fingerprint sensor placed at the rear of the smartphone.
